To mark 80 years of flights between Madrid and Lisbon, we asked Iberia's Manuela Barber for her favourite city spots.
A stroll: The Praça do Comerço metro exit faces the river Tagus and the Cais das Colunas. Take the seafront promenade to the Cais do Sodré, where boats leave for Cacilhas. I love the other side of the river for its fabulous views and fi sh restaurants.
Where to eat: You can eat well and for little nearly anywhere. Tágide in Baixa Chiado is a bit more expensive, but from your table you can see the Alfama district and the river. Le Pastelaria Versailles sells traditional pastries.
A museum: The businessman and art collector Gulbenkian donated his entire collection to the state. There are objects from the Egyptian period to Art Nouveau, as well as Asian art.
For the family: I recommend taking a sailboat tour from Cais do Sodré to Belém Tower.
Music: experience fado in a relaxed setting with tapas at Tasca do Chico. It’s tiny and packed. For something more laid-back head to the Clube do Fado, where some of the best fado performers started out.
Don’t miss: Catch the No. 15 ‘eléctrico’ bus to Belém and tour the Jerónimos monastery. And visit the nearby Pasteis de Belém sample its famous nata pastries.
