The purpose of a corporation is its raison d’etre, which transcends its business and adds value to society. At Iberia we have been flying since 1927 with a single purpose: "From Spain, we generate prosperity by connecting people with the world."
Faithful to its purpose, in these 98 years, Iberia has viewed flying as a means of providing vital connectivity to societies. It has long been a disinterested collaborator with Spain’s National Transplant Organisation, and during the pandemic, it operated numerous repatriation flights and shipped health supplies and vaccines where they were needed most. It is also organized to fly unaccompanied minors with the utmost safety. And with its Talento a bordo programme, it promotes Spanish culture and sport at all its destinations.
Today, this positive impact—felt in every destination we serve—can now be measured with a new tool: a calculator that quantifies the socio-economic impact of our operations across all international routes. This tool measures Iberia’s contribution to the economy and employment in the countries where we operate, and its methodology, along with the accuracy of both internal and external data used, has been verified by AENOR.
The socioeconomic contribution of the Iberia Group was analysed by the consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers in a report showing that the airline impacts Spanish GDP with over €9,300M (0.6%), through its direct, indirect, and induced activity; and translated into employment, more than 160,000 jobs in Spain (0.9%) are also directly or indirectly related to Iberia's activity. In addition, we collaborate with non-profit organisations so that we create a positive social impact in the communities where we conduct our business. Some of these projects are detailed below.
At Iberia, we are firmly committed to the inclusion of people with disabilities as an essential expression of diversity in today’s global society.
Envera is a non-profit organisation that was established in 1977 by Iberia employees who had children with disabilities. Its mission is to promote the social and occupational integration of these individuals and provide support throughout their lives. Envera offers early care, educational assistance and training, job placements and employment, recreational activities, cultural events and sport programs, as well as providing assistance in residences, occupational centers, and day centers for people with special needs.
Iberia collaborates actively with Envera thus ensuring compliance with the General Disabilities Act by contracting services from the Envera Special Employment Centre where work like the packaging of cutlery for in-flight services, the laundry of the linen for long-haul flights, and the management of documentation and warehouse inventory, among other things, are carried out. In this way, and thanks to the support of companies like Iberia, Envera is able to offer stable employment to more than 950 people with disabilities.
Over the years, Iberia’s support for professional inclusion has been especially significant. Envera staff have performed a wide range of tasks for Iberia, from document management, component cleaning and platform support work at La Muñoza, to engine screw sorting, laundry services and the preparation of onboard toiletry kits. In the past year, Envera has expanded its collaboration with Iberia in new ways, including the presence of Envera hostesses at Fitur, Espacio Iberia, and all the corporate events held at our headquarters.

In 2013, Iberia was the first airline globally to activate the micro-donation system to support UNICEF with the online purchase of plane tickets. In this way, Iberia customers who buy a ticket through Iberia.com may support the work that UNICEF carries out with vaccination programmes for vulnerable children. Iberia and UNICEF Spain, a decade in which, thanks to the support of our passengers and employees, we have supported childhood immunisation in 9 countries on three continents, contributing to the vaccination of more than 1.3 million boys and girls.
Likewise, since 2020 the alliance has been active in a new area of collaboration that, beyond strategic financing, contributes and puts the knowledge and experience of Iberia’s logistics teams, fleet, and commercial routes at the service of children. And this is possible thanks to the addition of IAG Cargo to the alliance as logistics facilitator. Under this new collaboration framework, in November 2021 a shipment of humanitarian supplies was sent to Haiti following the earthquake that shook the southwest of the country. In April 2024, more than six tons of healthcare materials and medicines have been transported to improve the health and well-being of children and their families, in anticipation of possible future humanitarian emergencies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- NGO Mano a mano is a non-profit organization that was established in 1994 by Iberia employees. Since then, Iberia collaborates with this organization in the transport of children who require urgent medical treatment, in the hauling of humanitarian aid, and in supporting NGO projects such as the “Aula Iberia” – “Iberia classroom”, to enhance the employment prospects of students at the secondary school in a rural area in Guatemala, the AMED water supply project in Morocco, and other projects such as “Benposta Nación de Muchachos” in Bogotá, an alternative way of life for children who are direct victims of situations of exploitation and social exclusion.
- Sepla Ayuda Foundation and Aviación sin fronteras NGO, were set up on the initiative of workers from the world of aviation. Both non-profit entities receive the company's support to develop projects in African and Latin American countries, linked to children's health, eucation and integration..
- Iberia supports the work of Fundación Integra to help the most vulnerable people in society achieve labor integration, especially women victims of gender violence. The company collaborates in various ways: by improving access to employment, supporting training programmes, participating in awareness workshops, and through the Avios Solidarios initiative, which allows Iberia customers to donate their Avios to the foundation.
- Iberia mantains a collaboration agreement with the UN Refugee Agency that facilitates the free transfer of refugees and their families to Spain with the aim of providing solutions and contributing to rebuilding their lives. These transfers are carried out within the framework of legal processes and institutional programmes and initiatives established for this purpose. This agreement contributes to upholding the universal right to family unity, something millions of refugees and displaced persons lose due to war and persecution. In addition to this agreement, Iberia supports the volunteer initiative led by UNHCR and the NGO Diaconía to help create support networks for refugee youth.
- We provide aid in emergency situations: For more than two years, Iberia and UNICEF Spain have collaborated to transport humanitarian aid using the cargo holds of the airline’s aircraft. In April 2024, Iberia delivered over six tonnes of medical supplies and medicines to support the health and well-being of children and their families, as a preventive measure in anticipation of future humanitarian emergencies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Another example of this work is Iberia’s partnership with the NGO Mano a Mano to transport humanitarian cargo. In 2024, nearly 2,000 kilograms of items, such as crockery, blankets, and pillows donated by Iberia, were shipped to Lima (Peru), where the social organisation Cáritas Peru took charge of distributing them to various projects in vulnerable and high-need areas.
Throughout the year 2024, and in collaboration with these and other organisations, Iberia helped transport around 13 tonnes of humanitarian aid to destinations such as Senegal, Colombia, Guatemala, and Ecuador.
The collaboration between Iberia and the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) highlights the importance of our activities and its high social impact because, it saves lives by guaranteeing organs arrive on time. We even achieved this throughout the pandemic. All these organs were livers and kidneys, which remain viable for the longest time before transplant.
Since 2013, the companies of the Iberia Group have transported more than 900 organs, which clearly explains the importance of this alliance to continue the chain of life that is the Organ Donation and Transplantation Strategic Plan.
An Iberia aircraft, registered as EC-OAY, proudly bears the name of the National Transplant Organisation on its fuselage, symbolising this important partnership.
Open innovation and a more collaborative company culture are two of the most important concepts emerging from Iberia’s ongoing digital transformation programme. Over 400 ideas were submitted by employees, and several have been implemented. The most notable is Solidarity Avios, proposed by a flight attendant, through which customers have donated over 50 million Avios to charitable causes supported by Iberia.
Under this programme, the airline asked its employees for ideas for sustainable improvements to all company areas. The first of these ideas to be put into practice is Avios Solidarios, which enables Iberia customer’s to donate Avios -frequent flyers’ points- to such NGOs as Ayuda en Acción, Fundación Aladina, Fundación Integra, Save The Children, Fundación 38 grados, and Aviación Sin Fronteras, along with Iberia employees’ own Mano a Mano and Envera NGOs, and the Fundación Sepla Ayuda.
Part of the work undertaken by these organisations involves air travel, so your Avios can make a crucial difference by enabling them to take their mission much further. You can log on to iberia.com and choose where to donate your Avios.
To fully develop the sustainability strategy, Iberia relies on the commitment of its employees, whose efforts and dedication are essential to give it its content and scope. An example of this commitment is the Iberia Volunteers programme. Since 2019, more than 400 employees have participated, collaborating with the Spanish Red Cross, the Spanish Food Bank Federation, the NGO Mano a mano, Envera, Fundación Sepla Ayuda, Aviación Sin Fronteras, Make A Wish, Juegaterapia and Nadie Solo.
Iberia employees volunteer with the Integra Foundation by conducting "Integra Tech - digital skills training workshops". These workshops aim to improve employment opportunities for individuals at risk of severe exclusion by enhancing their digital skills.
They also volunteer to support Envera’s Occupational Centre by proposing initiatives and activities for people with disabilities and their families, and by accompanying shipments of humanitarian aid for Envera’s international projects.
Iberia volunteers participate in the Contigo Programme, an initiative by UNHCR and the NGO Diaconía that creates support networks for young refugees. Through the involvement of volunteers from corporate, academic and social sectors, the programme offers companionship, language learning opportunities, and inclusive leisure activities.
