In late April, we launched a contest on our social networks for followers to vote for their preferred summer travel destinations. Ljubljana, in Slovenia, won against Bastia, Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Zakynthos Fez and the Azores, with 38 per cent of the vote. From Ljubljana castle, on Castle Hill, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and of the impressive Julian Alps. The most convenient way to ascend is in the cable car that leaves from Market Square. To return to the city, I recommend a walk down one of the many paths, exploring the surroundings as you go.

Ljubljana is divided into two by its river, the Ljubljanica. It’s nice to stroll along its banks, which are always filled with people, especially at sunset. You have to cross the Triple Bridge, which connects the Old Town and the modern city.

50km from Ljubljana. The caverns are amazing. You can take a bus from Ljubljana (tickets are €5). Wear a jacket, as the temperature contrast between street level and cave is considerable. And, since you’re already in Postojna, visit Predjama Castle, a fairy-tale dwelling embedded in a rock.
