oneworld and member airline Iberia celebrated the alliance’s 20th anniversary at the airline’s headquarters in Madrid, as oneworld continues its path of transformation to bring greater value to customers and member airlines.
oneworld CEO Rob Gurney and Iberia CEO Luis Gallego celebrated the milestone alongside Iberia employees and an Iberia Airbus A320neo featuring a special oneworld livery at Madrid-Barajas Airport. Gurney and Gallego also met with Iberia employees at a town hall on 1 October, offering an update on the alliance’s initiatives that were unveiled in February during the alliance’s 20th anniversary celebration. These include an innovative digital platform that will ultimately enable oneworld customers to check in and obtain boarding passes within their preferred member airline’s app, when travelling on multi-airline and multi-sector journeys.
Iberia is one of oneworld’s longest-term members, having joined the alliance in February 1999, shortly after oneworld was launched by founding members American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.
Iberia serves 137 destinations in 47 territories, increasing to 1,100 destinations in 180 territories with the oneworld network. In 2018, eight million passengers connected between flights operated by oneworld member carriers, generating US$5.5 billion in interline revenue.
oneworld airlines operate almost 14,000 daily departures with a combined fleet of 3,500 aircraft, with a oneworld flight taking off or landing every five seconds on average around the clock.
