Javier de la Fuente began working at Iberia in 1998 and, after many years on short-haul flights, he made the leap to long haul in 2009. “Mexico was always one of my favourite destinations,” he says. He even met his wife on a MEX-MAD flight in 2014.
BEST VIEWS: An ideal spot for a panoramic view of the city from 182m on high is undoubtedly the Latin American Tower, located on the corner of Madero and Lázaro Cárdenas streets in Mexico City’s historic centre. The views from its 44th floor are second to none!
A WALK : From Plaza de la Constitución, informally called Zócalo, you can stroll to the Metropolitan Cathedral to the north, the National Palace to the east, and the old City Council Palace and government building to the south.
A MUSEUM : The National Anthropology Museum in Polanco has more than 40,000m2 of space, including 22 exhibition rooms that house centuries of archaeological and anthropological history. Its restaurant offers a menu inspired by six regions of the country.
FAMILY OUTING : Chapultepec Forest is suitable for outdoor activities, such as biking, skateboarding, visiting the zoo or botanical garden, picnics, rowing a boat or touring a castle.
SOMETHING TO EAT : Try chiles en nogada, a dish from Puebla made by stuffing poblano chillies with seasoned ground meat and fruit, smothering them with a walnut cream sauce and then sprinkling on pomegranate seeds.
DON’T MISS: Visit Coyoacán in Mexico City’s southeast and explore the city’s canals in a gondola-like trajinera boat while listening to live mariachi music. If your schedule is tight, I’d recommend the Turibus – a tourist bus that offers different routes from north to south and from east to west and lets you jump on and off as much as you like.
