Greece in Winter, recommended by cabin crew member Miguel Ángel Navarro

Atenas

Miguel Ángel Navarro is a member of Iberia’s cabin crew. He’s been flying for 18 years now. He also has a degree in classical philology. His favourite destination? There’s no question: Greece. And if he  can choose, he prefers going in winter  so he can enjoy the wonders of the country without the summer throngs.

The best views: Mount Lycabettus is a promontory with panoramic views of Athens and the Acropolis. On clear days,  you can see as far as the port of Piraeus,  the Salamis and Aegina islands and the Saronic Gulf. You can reach its viewpoint either on foot or by cable car. There is also  a restaurant at the top, a small church dedicated to St George and a theatre.

A museum: Vergina’s Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, in nothern Greece, holds the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia (Alexander the Great’s father), which was discovered intact in 1977. The museum exhibits the king’s personal items, including his chariot, jewels, weapons and other items buried with him. If you prefer to be outdoors, then don’t miss the archaeological sites in Delphi.

Shopping: The Plaka neighbourhood in Athens is the perfect place to window shop. ts foundations are built over the ruins of classical Athens and its shops sell souvenirs, antiques, jewellery, clothing, works of art and almost anything imaginable. Its epicentre is Monastiraki Square.

Tasting: Try tzatziki (yoghurt with garlic and cucumber), taramasalata (fish roe), melitzanosalata (delicious creamy aubergine spread) and the exquisite saganaki cheese (saganaki tyrí), which is made of fried kefalotyri cheese seasoned with lemon juice. To wash it all down,  some nice cold retsina (resin) wine.

If you're with family: Make plans to get to know Greece’s Easter customs, with age-old traditions such as throwing large clay jugs of water from the balconies in Corfu, watching the night sky fill with lit paper balloons in Leonidio, or the Saitopólemos, or Dart War in Kalamata.

You can’t miss: An evening in a  koutouki in Athens. These are small tavernas where you can enjoy exquisite meze while listening to rebétika, a kind  of Greek-style blues.
