Hanane Chergui is an Iberia account manager in Morocco. With Iberia since 2000, she’s worked at the ticket office and Casablanca airport. She’s visited her family in Marrakech since she was a child. 

The number one spot: Jemaa el-Fnaa, the epicentre of the city. Merchants’ caravans rested here before entering the desert. You can immerse yourself among the bustle of snake charmers, fortune tellers, spice sellers, fresh juices and snails.

A stroll: The souk and Jemaa el-Fnaa tell the tale of our history and culture, as do camel rides through Palm Grove, and a carriage ride through the Old Medina.

Don’t miss: The Old Medina contains historical buildings such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace and the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the largest and most important Islamic college in Morocco. Just outside the Medina is the Majorelle Garden.

Something good to eat: Countless restaurants serve traditional tajines, couscous, mechoui, pastilla – most famously, Dar Moha, Al Fassia and L’ibzar. For dessert, I love authentic Moroccan pastry shop Saveur d’Orient. Enjoy a nice cup of mint tea with some sweet treats.

A museum: For something different, the Water Museum is historical, scientific, cultural, educational and fun. The concept is innovative and contemporary, in terms of the architecture and museum itself and the wealth of its exhibitions. At the entrance to the Palm Grove circuit, it’s the first structure devoted to the Moroccan, Arabic and Islamic water heritage. 

With the family: The red bus is a very convenient way to visit all of the city’s monuments and points of interest. With small children, what could be better than  a visit to the Oasiria water park?

Shopping: You’ll find all kinds of antiques, silver jewellery and tableware in the souk. 

Don’t miss: Sundown in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Get there while it’s still light, visit the souk, then come back out as night falls.
