Important notice to Iberia Customers as snowtorm closes Madrid Airport
- Iberia advises customers with flights to or from Madrid not to go to the Madrid airport or to the airport of origin. There are no flights.
- Customers with flights on 8, 9, or 10 January may change their flight times and dates without penalty as long as when the new flights take place from 11 January to 11 March.
- To make the changes, contact Iberia or the travel agency where you purchased the ticket. If you bought them directly from Iberia for a flight today, 9th January or tomorrow, you can make the changes on iberia.com (“Your flights”).
- Iberia also asks you add your contact data to your reservations on iberia.com, so we can contact you directly if necessary. The continuing snowstorm and low temperatures mean that the flight programme may be interrupted for a longer period.
- Please refrain from using our telephone help lines whenever possible, leaving them free for problems that cannot be resolved via the website.
- Iberia is pressing the authorities to give priority to clearing the road accesses to Madrid airport, in order to ensure the movement of employees and the receipt of supplies, including de-icing materials.
- Since 8 January, 17 Madrid-bound Iberia aircraft carrying 2,900 passengers had to land at alternative airports –10 to Barcelona, 6 to Malaga, and one to Valencia. Another 5 aircraft now en route to Spain from Bogota, Cali, Quito, Havana and Santo Domingo are being routed to the Canary Islands where numerous hotels are available.
- This means that, when service is resumed, a total of 22 aircraft with their crews will be away from their bases, which will delay the return to normal operations.
- Iberia’s VIP lounge will remain open day and night, and Arrivals Hall 10 has been equipped to accommodate stranded passengers with blankets and snacks.
- Our employees are working double shifts, due to difficulties to reach the airport, since roads are closed and the only means of transport now operating to the airport is the Madrid Metro (underground).
- Iberia thanks its customers for their patience and understanding, and its employees for their commitment to serve even under the most adverse circumstances.
