Uruguayan Evelina Pietra is from Montevideo and has worked for Iberia for 24 years, starting out as a management secretary, then in bookings, in cargo, at the airport, at the counters, as a supervisor and a sales executive, and now as Iberia’s sales manager in Uruguay. Who better to tell us what to see in her country?
The best views: Travelling along our rambla (coast); whether on foot or by car, Montevideo boasts incredible views, each area with its own particularities and beauty. Travelling east to Maldonado, in Punta Ballena you’ll fi nd Casa Pueblo, which has one of the most incredible views imaginable.
A museum: The National Museum of Visual Arts (MNAV) houses the biggest public collection of Uruguayan painting and sculpture, along with a nice selection of foreign art. I highly recommend visiting the Carnival Museum in the Old Town.
Shopping: Antiques lovers will fi nd several places in the Old Town where they can buy antique items and porcelain in excellent condition at reasonable prices.
Something good to eat: You simply can’t leave Uruguay without trying our grilled meats. Any cut is very good, but the best known is the tira de asado (sirloin strip). Also worth trying is the chivito al pan (a well-seasoned beefsteak sandwich) and of course – dulce de leche.
If you’re travelling with family: It would be ideal to visit Colonia del Sacramento, a small, charming city with a mix of Spanish and Portuguese architectural styles. It’s truly a jewel in western Uruguay.
Don’t miss: If you come in summer, visit a spa east of Montevideo. You’ll ÿ nd contrasting options, such as Cabo Polónio, which is car-free and can be reached only by authorised vehicles that come and go all day. If you’re looking for quite the opposite, there’s Punta del Este and José Ignacio. Each has its own natural charm, but they’re completely diferent.
