Operation Kathmandu

Nepal, a South Asian country almost 8,000 kilometres from Spain and known to be the roof of the world. On 19 May, in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we chartered a flight to the capital, Kathmandu, to rescue a hundred Spanish and other European citizens trapped in the country following the closure of its borders due to the pandemic.

Among all the people we repatriated were some of Spain's most prestigious mountaineers, such as Juanito Oiarzábal and Sebastián Álvaro.  The latter, director and presenter of the television programme "Al filo de lo imposible", tells us about his experience in a video in which he thanks Iberia for its efforts.
The fact is that "setting up" this type of flight is a complicated operation, above all, it is difficult to obtain the traffic and overflight permits; and also landing in Kathmandu, a very complex airport due to the orography of the terrain where it is located and which requires particular expertise on the part of the pilots.

No doubt it was all worth it. Here we leave you with this story with a happy ending.
