Management Change at Iberia’s Handling Unit

In another change in the Iberia organisation made since Javier Sánchez-Prieto became Iberia’s Executive Chairman, and with the aim of adapting as well as possible to the needs of all business areas, there has been a change at the top in the airline’s airport handling division, Iberia Airport Services (IBAS). 

The former manager of IAS, Ángel Marcos, has been named to head the CACESA logistics service CACESA, Iberia’s prestigious courier service.

He has been replaced at IAS by José Luis de Luna, with 25 years of experience of airport managment, the past seven of them with Iberia.

José Luis de Luna is an aeronautical engineer with an MBA from the IESA advanced business school,. He worked previously in a series of positions at the Spanish national airport authority AENA, where he was instrumental in the expansion of the Madrid airport, later working for EuroHandling and FlightCare before joining Iberia.

 

Transformation of the Airport Handling Business  

Ángel Marcos' eight years heading IAS were a key period for the handling division, which in 2015 won 17 of the 20 contracts Iberia bid for as handling operator in as many Spanish airports, raising the total to 29, and thus keeping its leadership in a highly competitive and challenging business.

During this period the handling unit also recovered levels of profitability in accordance with the market, while reaching progressively higher satisfaction ratings from the 150 airlines it serves. In 2019, Iberia Airport Services assisted more than 100 million passengers and 360,000 aircraft.

 The improvements carried our during the same period were key to increasing the efficiency of Iberia’s operations and contributed to the major gains in flight punctuality –Iberia led the world in punctuality in 2016 and 2017. 

In the same period, IAS launched the innovative Go Up! project under which it adapted to customers’ needs by digitising and streamlining all processes and procedures, improving the environmental sustainability of its operations and the commitment of its employees.
