Iberia has been flying from Spain since 1927 with the same purpose: “From Spain, we generate prosperity by connecting people with the world”. This positive social and economic impact that the airline has on all the places where it operates now can be measured.
The airline has presented today at Fitur a calculator of the socioeconomic impact of its activity on all the international routes it operates. AENOR has verified its methodology and the accuracy of the data used and reported, both internal and external. The calculator makes it possible to quantify, in terms of economic impact and employment, Iberia's impact in the countries in which it operates.
Teresa Parejo, Iberia's Sustainability Director, acknowledges that “it is very important for Iberia to have metrics to measure the impact generated by our activity. Calculating the GDP and employment generated in the countries where we operate is a first step that marks the path in 2025 towards new metrics that define the socioeconomic impact generated by aviation”. Parejo received the certification from Nicolás Henríquez, director of business development at AENOR.
Henríquez emphasized that “measuring is the first step to continue moving forward. Iberia is a benchmark in its sector and for the economic fabric as a whole, which is why the message of rigor in the calculation of its social footprint is of particular value. AENOR is proud to collaborate in this effort aimed at improving Iberia's important and positive social footprint, demonstrating to all its stakeholders its commitment to good practices”.
This initiative began to take shape in June 2023, when Iberia, together with the consulting firm Transcendent, developed an initiative focused on measuring and assessing the economic and social impact generated by the airline on three selected routes: Mexico City, Bogota and Miami. The main impacts analyzed, both in Spain and in the different destinations, were the creation of direct, indirect and induced employment and the contribution to the GDP. Data from Oxford Economics, IATA and UNWTO, among others, were used as sources of information.
First routes analyzed
Iberia's route between Madrid and Mexico City generates 11,470 jobs, including direct jobs in the airline, indirect jobs through the value chain and induced jobs. It also contributes 154 million euros to Mexico's GDP and almost 60 million euros to Spain's GDP. In the case of the route between Madrid and Bogota, Iberia's operations have contributed to the creation of 14,932 jobs.
