  • Designer Teresa Helbig. composer Javier Limón and the latter’s brother, painter Ricardo López, have designed the Meninas, inspired by their experience with Iberia.

Iberia is taking part in the second annual urban art exhibition “Meninas Madrid Gallery”, in which established, emerging, and amateur artists show how they see Madrid with works based on Diego de Velázquez’ iconic 1656 “Las Meninas” --ladies in waiting or maids of honour—painting, which now hangs in Madrid’s Prado Museum.

This year Iberia is participating with two Meninas figures as part of its  #Talentoabordo project. The first, installed in front of Madrid’s town hall building, near the Cibeles Fountain, is the work of of designer Teresa Helbig, chosen by Iberia to design new uniforms for its employees. “The Menina’s dress belongs to our collection “Rien ne va plus”. It as a jewel of a dress with a skirt adorned with playing cards showing hearts, spades, and --in a nod to Iberia-- airplanes. The colour is ivory decorate set off by gold and copper tones,” explained Helbig, whose Menina is entitled “Talent is Never Unnoticed”.

Iberia's second Menina, entitled “Flying Around Madrid”, is located at the Alfonso XII street entrance to the city’s Retiro Park. Javier Limón, the composer and musician who wrote Iberia’s theme song "Volando” [“Flying”], designed it in collaboration with his brother, painter Ricardo López. “We took our inspiration from the lyrics of the Iberia song, written to mark the arrival of the Airbus A350. We use all the worlds of the song, playing with them and with the size and shape of the typefaces, to endow our Menina with her own graphic style”, the brothers said.

Iberia’s Meninas and many others will remain on display in the Spanish capital until 30 November.
