“The Olympic Games,” says Iberia’s Corporate Manager Juan Cierco, “are the first major world sporting event since the outbreak of the pandemic, and the first opportunity for fans around the world to witness such an event.” He added, “The Games will be a shot in the arm to boost morale, and Iberia will take a very active part in this great fiesta.”
Iberia has supported Spanish sport since its founding 94 years ago this month, and once again has been designated the official airline of the Spanish Olympic and Paralympic teams, flying them to the Games and back to Spain, “hopefully with a lot of medals,” says Cierco.
Supporting Spanish Talent
Iberia has sponsored numerous cultural and sporting projects involving talented Spaniards in the fields of art, fashion, cinema, theatre, design, music, literature, and photography, publicising them in the air and at all its international destinations. On this occasion the airline’s focus is to lend greater visibility to such Olympic events as sailing, canoeing, and hockey, in which Spanish competitors are prominent.
Accordingly, it created the “Iberia Team” with seven Olympic and four Paralympic competitors. The Olympic team members are Lydia Valentín (weightlifting), Niko Shera (judo), Fátima Gálvez (shooting), Sandra Sánchez (karate), Teresa Portela (canoeing), María López (hockey), Silvia Mas (sailing), and the Paralympic competitors are Loida Zabala (weightlifting), Eva Moral (triathlon), and Sarai Gascón and María Delgado (swimming).
Some of these athletes are featured in Iberia’s latest commercial, showing how they trained during the Covid-19 lockdown. Lydia Valentin is pictured lifting large jugs of water, and María Delgado is shown practising her strokes in a child’s plastic pool.
Some of the items used for training during the pandemic are on display at the Dalí VIP Lounge at Iberia’s T4 hub in Madrid Airport.
An Airbus A350 named “Equipo Olímpico Español”
Iberia names its aircraft for emblematic people and places, and last year it christened one of its new A350s to honour the Spanish Olympic Team.
That aircraft will be used to bring the Spanish team home at the end of the Games.
