Going to San Francisco? Juan Carlos Ferreiro, an Iberia flight attendant, recommends his favourite spots

San Francisco, TCP

Juan Carlos Ferreiro has been an Iberia flight attendant for the past 15 years and a purser for the past year and a half. One of his passions is travelling, which is why he enjoys his job so much. He takes advantage of his free time to explore new cities whenever he can, and one of his favourite destinations is San Francisco.

A stroll: At sunrise, I love to go for a run in Russian Hill, one of the city’s original seven hills. After making it almost to the top, I like to wander around the streets of the nearby neighbourhoods filled with Colonial-style mansions, such as Pacific Heights. They are the true survivors of the Great Earthquake.

The best views: If the day is sunny, a  great option is to cross the bay from Pier 41 to the fishing village of Sausalito. Just 30 minutes away by boat, it’s known for  its fishing port and more than 400 houseboats. Along the way, you can take a fantastic picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Something good to eat: Crab sandwiches and clam chowder in Fisherman’s Wharf,  a neighbourhood right on the bay.

Art: One of the city’s unmissable treasures is the hidden mural by Diego Rivera, the Allegory of California fresco in The City Club of San Francisco.

If you go with your family: Visit the incredibly crooked Lombard Street, a favourite with tourists and an icon of my childhood thanks to the Falcon Crest TV series’ credits.

You can’t miss: The Rock. But you must book your tour in advance online. The ferries leave from Pier 33. The trip includes a ferry ride to the island where Alcatraz is located. Once there, visitors are provided with audio-guides so they can explore the dank, gloomy prison at their own pace. After the infirmary, corridors and cells, you reach a small courtyard where – just as  Al Capone did – you can enjoy great views of San Francisco.

Highly recommended: A quick stop to recharge at Caffè Trieste, in Little Italy, where Coppola was inspired to create  The Godfather.
