Rafael Azpíroz is a manager of Iberia's Airports Management innovation projects. He's just returned from Florence, one of the cities Iberia is focusing on this year. There will be six additional flights, up to two a day, nearly everyday from next April.
Museums: Florence has may museums, but if I had to choose I would go for the Cathedral Museum, to enjoy the Florentine architecture, with the cathedral -one of the biggest in Christianity- and its enormous dome built by Brunellischi; the Baptistery with its famous Gates of Paradise, and Giotto's Campanille; and, without any doubt, the imposing David by Michelangelo at the Gallery of the Academy of Florence.
To eat: There are two options when hunger strikes: the trattorias for traditional Tuscan dishes, or street food consisting of the famous panino with lampredotto (a type of tripe) seasoned and cooked with vegetables and served on a bun. Of course, you can't leave without enjoying some authentic italian ice cream. When night falls, it's time to enjoy a traditional orange-flavoured drink, the Spritz (made with Campari if you like a bitter touch or with Aperol if you prefer it a bit sweeter), along with a simple dinner buffet in the area around the Piazza di Santa Croce.
The best views: Whenever I travel, I always look for the best places to enjoy the sunset. In Florence, it's the Piazzale Michelangelo, on the other side of the river, once you cross the Ponte Vecchio. The views of the cities are impressive, and even more so if you accompany them with a nice Moretti beer.
Don't miss: It's a very nice for enjoying a stroll and is very accesible from the airport. So be sure to set aside time for walking to simplu enjoy the city.
And if you've still got some time... There are lots of pretty villages around Florence that are filled with history, such as San Gimigniano and its mediaeval towers, ot the city of Siena.
