Carlos Liras began flying as a member of the short- and medium-haul cabin crew in June 2016 and has been a chief steward at Iberia since April 2019. He never tires of revisiting Paris, where he discovers something new on every trip. Here are some of his favourite places.
The best views
The Eiffel Tower and the Sacré-Cœur are always sure bets, but there are lesser-known places that are equally spectacular. For an evening out of doors, there is no better spot than Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, where you can enjoy the sunset on the shore of the lake. For a more intimate evening, watch the night fall while enjoying a drink on the terrace of the Holiday Inn hotel on rue Danton, near the Île de la Cité.
Museums
Take a stroll through the Jardin des Plantes and tour the Natural History Museum. Then take a walk through the Bassin de l’Arsenal, near the Gare d’Austerlitz. Or visit the Musée des Arts et Métiers, where you can examine scientific inventions across the world leading up to the early days of aviation.
Shopping
Little remains of the old Les Halles after its renovation in 2016. This former food market has given way to the Forum des Halles, a vast indoor-outdoor shopping and leisure centre, which has become the new heart of Paris. Shops, restaurants, a cinema, a conservatory and a centre for amateur dance and theatre co-exist in an architectural work that has radically changed this part of the city.
Delicatessen
The Berthillon ice cream parlour on Île Saint-Louis is a perfect mid-afternoon spot to enjoy artisanal ice cream. And, for another taste of something local, I recommend a neighbourhood food market, such as the one in Levallois-Perret, just outside Paris. After a fire last year, its stalls are out on the street while the new market is being built.
Family time
Parc de la Villette, a former abattoir and livestock market in the 19th arrondissement, offers modern architecture, magnificent walks and a broad cultural offering for all, which includes an outdoor cinema, museums for children, theatre, circuses and concerts, among other attractions. It is also filled with cafés and restaurants where you can recharge your batteries.
