Iberia has added Amsterdam to the list of airports where it picks up Covid-19 vaccine, chiefly from the Spanish Canary and Balearic islands. Formerly it picked up vaccine supplies only in Brussels.
Last night it brought two pallets holding 68 kg each of vaccine from Amsterdam to Madrid. The first of these reached the Canary Island of Tenerife and the second was reached Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. And another one with 54 kg. has arrived this morning at Mallorca, in Balearic islands.
Since 28 December Iberia has brought 24 shipments of vaccine to Spain’s North African enclave Melilla, as well as to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Majorca.
The vaccines were transshipped in the Madrid by IAG Cargo, which handles all freight shipments by IAG airlines. Proper refrigeration was guaranteed by the IAG “Constant Climate” service used for pharmaceutical and other perishable goods. The service uses refrigerated aircraft holds, ground vehicles, and a special airport storage facility for pharmaceuticals that IAG installed at the Madrid cargo terminal in 2019.
IAG Cargo has carried more than a million doses of the vaccine through its terminals in Madrid, London, and Dublin.
Safe Airport
Both the M
adrid airport and the cargo terminal were recently re-certified for adhering to Good distribution Practices (GDP) in handling medical goods, for which Madrid is the main hub in Southern Europe.
Iberia’s Madrid handling staff is also certified and trained under the European Commission 2013/C 343/01 standard.
Bureau Veritas recently audited these installations and staff, giving them a positive evaluation.
