Copenhagen, by a half-Spanish, half Danish member of our cabin crew

Copenhague

Marta Ruíz Balle is a member of Iberia’s long-haul cabin crew. With a Spanish father and a Danish mother, she joined the company in 1998 and moved to the long-haul fleet in 2001. Copenhagen, her mother’s hometown, is one of her favourite cities.

THE BEST VIEWS
The most entertaining views are flying over the city in the ‘Star Flyer’, the world’s tallest flying chairs (80m) in Tivoli Park. Also, climb the dome of the Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke): 400 outdoor steps lead you up to the best view of the city.

A WALK
Scenic boats from Nyhavn harbour cruise the canals. Admire the famous little mermaid statue on the waterside and enjoy peering at the designer homes with miniature quays, and modern buildings such as the Copenhagen Opera House and the Royal Library, with its Black Diamond extension.

MUSEUMS
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art has gardens overlooking the Swedish coast. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum has an interior garden and a collection of classical and modern sculpture.

SHOPPING
On pedestrianised Strøget, you’ll find the fanciest shops, such as Royal Copenhagen, with its famous porcelains, and modern design stores such as Illums Bolighus.

FAMILY OUTING
Visit the Tivoli amusement park and the Kronborg (Hamlet) castle north of the city, where actors play Shakespearean characters and kids can walk on stilts. And explore the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.

DON’T MISS
Danes know how to enjoy life and have remodelled the areas around their canals with modern, open and organic spaces with teak underfoot. Take a dip by the ‘Kissing Stairs’ near the Admiral Hotel, or visit Nærvær in the trendy district of Christianshavn to dine on seafood with fried green plantains, toasted corn kernels and corn on the cob.
