As demand recovers, Iberia is gradually increasing flight frequencies, and this summer it has resumed daily services between Madrid and San José, Costa Rica. This increase from five to seven flights per week strengthens its leadership and indicates continuing commitment to Central America.
Used for these flights are Airbus A330-200s, seating up to 269 passengers in Economy and another 19 in Business Class. The twin-engined aircraft can take off with a top weight of 242 tonnes and have a range of 11,500 km. They burn 15% less fuel and emit proportionately less exhaust than their predecessors.

The increase is aimed at favouring the flow of travellers in both directions and improving Costa Rica’s connectivity to Iberia’s 90+ European destinations.
Promotional fares for return flights in Economy start as low as 360.566CRC, and flights can be changed or refunded with vouchers under Iberia’s flexibility policy.
Iberia’s Latin America Sales Manager Victor Moneo said, “We are aware of the importance of maintaining connectivity with Central America, and consequently in 2012 we are supplying 246,000 seats. Iberia currently offers better connectivity and the largest number of direct flights from Europe, and is a great satisfaction to us to restore pre-pandemic flight frequencies.
“We have served Costa Rica for nearly 50 years and in 2004 we became the first airline to operate direct flights from Europe, and our commitment has been constant over time. We are confident that this capacity increase will help enliven the market, as Costa Rica’s dazzling variety of landscapes and microclimates, plus growing business opportunities, will attract more and more visitors.”
Flying Safely
This years marks the 48th anniversary of Iberia first flight to Costa Rica, and during this entire period safety has always been the Spanish airline's top priority. During the pandemic the company has implemented an exhaustive range of measures to protect the health of customers and employees.
Thanks to the rigorous application of these measures, Iberia is ranked amongst the world’s top ten airlines for safety against Covid-19 by the Safe Travel Barometer, while Skytrax awarded Iberia four stars for its preventive policies.
