Iberia is strengthening its commitment to the Mexican market with the launch of its new direct service between Madrid and Monterrey.

The route will operate three weekly flights, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays., and will be served by a next-generation Airbus A330-200 aircraft configured with Business and Economy cabins and capacity for 288 passengers.

This milestone forms part of Iberia’s long-term strategic roadmap, Flight Plan 2030, and enables the airline to offer more than 53,000 seats connecting Monterrey with over 100 destinations across Spain, Europe, Africa and Asia through its Madrid hub.

With the addition of Monterrey, Iberia will now serve two destinations in Mexico with direct flights from Madrid: Mexico City and Monterrey. Together, these routes will offer more than 820,000 seats, representing an 8% increase in capacity compared with a year ago.

Route Days of Operation Departure Time Arrival Time
Madrid-Monterrey Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 13:10h  17:05h
Monterrey-Madrid Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 18:35 13:05 (+1)

The launch of this route is fully aligned with the strategic roadmap outlined in Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030, which seeks to strengthen the airline’s leadership in connectivity between Latin America and Europe while continuing to enhance the customer experience. As a result, Iberia has decided to proceed with the opening of this new route despite the current international environment and the impact of rising fuel prices.

"We are extremely proud that this day has finally arrived. It marks a very important milestone not only in the 76 years that Iberia has been flying to Mexico, but also in the almost 80 years that we have been connecting Latin America and Europe. With the launch of the Madrid–Monterrey route, we are adding a new destination in Mexico, which is already Iberia’s largest market in Latin America by seat capacity, with more than 820,000 seats. This represents around 14% of our total capacity in Latin America," said María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Chief Commercial Officer, Network Development and Alliances

To celebrate the launch, Iberia has prepared a special onboard experience for customers. Passengers travelling in Business Class will be offered a margarita cocktail, one of Mexico’s most iconic drinks, while customers in the rest of the aircraft will be able to sample a selection of traditional Mexican sweets. All passengers will also receive a commemorative gift.

Before the inaugural flight departed from Madrid, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The event was attended by María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Chief Commercial Officer, Network Development and Alliances, and Víctor Moneo, Iberia’s Global Sales Director, accompanied by Ana Paniagua, Aena’s Director of Customer Experience at Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Strengthening Connectivity Between Mexico and Spain

In addition to launching this direct route, Iberia recently reached an agreement with Viva, enabling customers to connect from Monterrey to 32 destinations across Mexico. Through Monterrey Airport, travellers will gain access to an extensive domestic network serving destinations across Mexico.

To further strengthen ties between Mexico and Spain, Iberia also offers its Stopover Hola Madrid programme. This initiative allows passengers travelling from Monterrey, both on their outbound and return journeys, to enjoy a stopover in Madrid of up to nine nights at no additional airfare cost, while enjoying exclusive discounts on accommodation, transport, dining and leisure activities.
